Dr. Mark Diem

D

r. Mark Diem, medical di-
rector of First Care Med-
ical Centers, is this year's
recipient of the Mai-
monides Award. The award is
presented to a health care pro-
fessional who has exhibited out-
standing leadership in
community activities.
The award will be presented
May 19th at Congregation
Shaarey Zedek in Southfield. It
is presented by Israel Bonds for
dedication and support of com-
munity, Jewish causes and the
State of Israel. Israel Bonds of-
fers interest-bearing bonds for
the economic development of Is-
rael.
The award is named in hon-
or of Moses Maimonides, one of
the most important Jewish
scholars of the Middle Ages. He
was born in the 13th century 5n
Spain and fled to Egypt to avoid
religious persecution. His med-
ical works were so influential he
became personal physician to
the sultan. In his spare time, he
wrote Mishneh Torah, the first
systemic code of Jewish law.
Dr. Diem is very active in
civic and community projects
throughout Michigan. The
"Shine a Light In Darkness"
project is one example of Dr.
Diem's community work. He
coordinates the project with the
Salvation Army and the Men's
Club of Congregation Shaarey
Zedek. On Christmas Eve, Dr.
Diem, his family, First Care
staffers and synagogue mem-
bers deliver Christmas dinners
to needy Detroit families.
Dr. Diem grew up in North-
west Detroit and graduated
from Wayne State University
and the College of Osteopathic
Medicine in Des Moines, Iowa.
He is certified by the state of
Michigan in family practice,
occupational medicine, quality
assurance and utilization re-
view and just finished his mas-
ter's in public health at Loma
Linda University. He is married
with four children.
