on Social Action of Reform Ju-
daism sent letters to Michigan
congregations asking for sup-
port. The same month, Gov.
John Engler said "I believe a
Colorado-type amendment
would have a negative impact
if adopted in Michigan."
Last October, the Union of
American Hebrew Congrega-
tions reaffirmed its 1977 bien-
nial convention resolution
affirming the rights of gay men
and lesbians to equal protection
of the law and to full protection
of their civil rights.
The UAHC added a resolu-
tion not to hold regional or na-
tional meetings in any state or
municipality which has as law
the denial of civil rights to gays,
lesbians or bisexuals after Jan.
1, 1995.
In the past, the organized Or-
thodox community has not sup-
ported gay and lesbian rights.
Conservative Jews have been
split on the issue.
Rebecca Fleischman, a mem-
ber of the board of governors of
the Human Rights Campaign
Fund — a founding organiza-
tion of the MCHD — doesn't be-
lieve support of the MCHD goes
against the more traditional
views of such Jews.
"Disapproving of oppression
doesn't have to mean approval
of any one way of life," Ms. Fleis-
chman said. "Being able to do
your job, being able to put a roof
over your head without fear of
losing either is something even
very traditional, very conserv-
ative individuals can under-
