Return Of Israeli MIAs

Washington (JTA) — In a
demonstration of continued
concern for the fate of Israeli
soldiers missing in action,
Jewish leaders presented a

urging U.S. action to secure
the return of the MIAs.
A delegation from the
United Jewish Appeal's
Young Leadership Cabinet
presented House Majority
Leader Richard Gephardt,

the United States "must in-
sist that the governments of
Syria and Lebanon and the
PLO (Palestine Liberation
Organization) cooperate ful-
ly to provide all information
relating to MIAs and
POWs."
It also called on the United
States to continue working
with European, Middle
Eastern and other govern-
ments, and the United
Nations, to resolve the issue.
Speakers at UJA's wide-

Promised to push MIA issue.

to end the terrible suffering
of their families."
The petition was signed by
2,600 delegates attending
UJA's Ninth National
Young Leadership Con-
ference here this week.
A UJA statement said that
Mr. Gephardt promised the
group that he would take the
petition to the State
Department and urge the
administration to push for-
ward on the MIA issue.
The issue of the Israeli
MIAs has come to the fore in
recent months, as MIA fami-
ly members have visited the
United States and urged
U.S. officials to play an ac-
tive part in trying to ascer-
tain the fates of the soldiers,
some of whom have been
missing for over a decade.
Israel views the resolution
of the MIA issue as an im-
portant part of the Middle
East peace process.

Arad, captured in Lebanon
in 1986, and Zacharia
Baumel, Avi Feldman and

Rome (JTA) — The Vatican's
foreign minister, Monsignor
Jean-Louis Tauran, held a
"profitable" meeting with
Palestine Liberation Organ-
ization. Chairman Yassir
Arafat during a trip to
Tunisia and Libya last week
that coincided with Pope
John Paul II's meeting at
the Vatican with Israeli
Prime Minister Yitzhak
Rabin.
In a statement, Vatican
spokesman Joaquin Navarro
Valls also said Monsignor
Tauran's trip had led to the
establishment of a commis-
sion on the problems and ac-
tivities of the Roman
Catholic Church in Libya.
Besides his "profitable
meeting" with Mr. Arafat in
Tunis, Monsignor Tauran
had met with the Tunisian
president and, in Tripoli,
with Libyan leader
Muammar Gadhafi, Mr.
Navarro said.
The trip "confirms the in-
tention of the Vatican to
tighten relations with the
Arab world at a pace equal
to its diplomatic recognition
of Israel, and it emphasizes
the growing role of the Vat-
ican in the Middle East
peace process," the Rome
daily 11 Messaggero said.
The Vatican and Israel
signed an agreement Dec. 30
that is expected to lead to
full diplomatic relations this
year. ❑
