WHO: Dan Smokier

SCHOOL: Greenhills, Ann Ar-
bor

PROUD OF: Dan led his class-
mates last month in a two-week
drive to collect luxury items and
toiletries for the people of Sara-
jevo.

HOW: A 9th-grader at Green-
hills, Dan read with his class
the Diary of Anne Frank. It led
to "huge discussions every day.
Then someone raised the issue
of the city of Sarajevo, ethnic
cleansing, and that it's all hap-
pening again."
Dan called the American
Jewish Joint Distribution Com-
mittee (JDC) in New York, ex-
pecting to be told that the
people of Sarajevo would need
food and clothing. Instead, he
was told the city needed toys,
baby items and cosmetics.
After two weeks, Dan and his
classmates had filled a class-
room with 3x5-foot boxes
packed with items for Sarajevo.
Some families donated money,
which paid for shipping the box-
es to the JDC and on to Saraje-
vo.
JDC officials told Dan that

community heard about the
Greenhills project and decided
to follow their example.

POSTSCRIPT: Dan's experi-
ence has given him more of a
world view. "I keep seeing all
these ridiculous stories in the
newspaper — Tonya Harding,
Lorena Bobbitt — and then,
way in the back, there will be a
little item about Bosnia.
"It struck me how silly we are
to be more interested in trivial
things."
