From Colonial beginnings, candlesticks have always been a part of our history. Albert Pa- ley's candleholders sit on the Grand Staircase of the White House. His tall candle stands drip and flow like the candles they are meant to hold, defying the very substance from which they are constructed. Jonathan Bonner creates his whimsical creature candle- holders. Anteaters, alligators, and reptiles all seem to move and sway to the sounds of an ancient, invisible flute. Charles Crowley challenges the imagination with his pieces which blend form with function, doses of whimsey and the avant-garde. Tom Joyce starts with a flat piece of mild steel about 10 feet long, which he heats, folds and weaves as if worldng with fabric. John Iverson contrasts size with openness and airiness in his structures. He finds his in- spiration in the natural world for his jewelry. The gallery is located at 132 North Woodward, Birmingham. Hours are 11-5 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday.
