The conference, held in the city council hall in Bologna on March 9, touched on prob- lems and needs associated with the care and preserva- tion of archaeological re- mains, archives, libraries, monuments, buildings and other Jewish relics. One of the key issues was that of the Jewish catacombs in Rome — two vast sets of underground caverns, full of frescoes and other decora- tions, that were used for Jewish burials in ancient Roman times. Until five years ago, the catacombs came under the jurisdiction of the Vatican. They are now under the jurisdiction of the Italian Culture Ministry, but are not open to the public. Attendees at the con- ference discussed a wide range of topics, including the current lack of nationwide coordination of activities aimed at preserving Jewish relics. Jewish heritage sites in Italy range from Medieval ghetto districts, some in southern Italian towns where Jews were expelled centuries ago, to beautiful baroque synagogues in a number of towns and cities of northern Italy. Representatives of the Re- gion of Emilia Romagna, where Bologna is located, discussed ongoing plans to open new Jewish museums at Ferrara and in Bologna. The museum in Bologna will be located in the area which was the old Jewish ghetto. ❑ Discerning customers love the cotton fabric and design of Joan vacs separates.
