Schindler's List.

After seeing the Oscar-
winning Holocaust epic, Ms.
Davis, a prominent Jewish
activist from Pittsburgh,
last month launched "The
Schindler Project" with the
goal of raising funds so that
high-schoolers in the Pitt-
sburgh area could see the
film and discuss it afterward
in a classroom setting.
But the project has since
taken on national dimen-
sions.
Response to the idea was
so overwhelming that she
decided to expand the project
from one school to many.
"It's amazing how respon-
sive everyone is to the idea,"
she said. "Almost no one has
turned me down when I ask
for the funds to help pay for
the tickets and transporta-
tion."
Ms. Davis' fund-raising
efforts proved more suc-
cessful than even she may
have imagined. In just three
days, she raised over $6,000
for the project. That total
has since grown more than
thirtyfold.
When she conceived the
project in February, Ms.
Davis contacted the Holo-
caust Center of Greater Pitt-
sburgh, which soon gave its
backing to the idea.
In addition to lending its
name and support to the pro-
ject, the center provided ed-
ucational materials to par-
ticipating schools in the Pit-
tsburgh area.
To date, some 27,000 high
school seniors and school of-
ficials have seen the film or
are soon scheduled to do so.
Showings are currently be-
ing arranged in New York,
Balt- imore, Philadelphia,
and in Akron and Columbus,
Ohio.
Ms. Davis recently con-
tacted Rabbi Marvin Hier,
director of the Simon
Wiesenthal Center in Los
Angeles, to describe the pro-
ject. Rabbi Hier soon lent his
name and support — as did
Miles Lerman, chairman of
the U.S. Holocaust
Memorial Council in Wash-
ington, whom Davis also
contacted with the idea.
The project has also been
endorsed by 15 U.S. sena-
tors.
The nationwide project is
being made possible by do-
nations to various Holocaust
centers.
