Detroiters Boycott Brandeis Newspaper ALAN HITSKY ASSOCIATE EDITOR L a'asoth, a fledgling Jewish organization created by Detroiters, is asking ad- vertisers in the Brandeis University student newspaper to withhold their ads. The action was taken in re- sponse to a Dec. 7 advertisment in The Justice, placed by Holo- caust "revisionist" Bradley R. Smith. The same material ap- You have the right to know the truth! A recent issue of The Justice had 11 advertisements, said La'asote founder Berl Falbaum. Members of the group began contacting advertisers last week and will meet April 7 to "take inventory." Mr. Falbaum said La'asote took several months to respond because the group only meets once a month. He said similar action was not taken against the State News and the Michigan Daily because those campus newspa- pers published the revisionist material "even longer ago. Be- sides, Brandeis is a Jewish in- stitution, and that makes it even more troubling." Dan Rademacher, editor of The Justice, said, "I'm really not going to worry about it (the call for a boycott) unless we start losing advertising." He was un- aware of any ads being pulled. Brandeis is a primarily Jew- ish university in Waltham, Mass. The Justice is funded through student activity fees and carries little advertising. Some 4,000 copies are distrib- uted daily, with another 100 sent off-campus through paid subscriptions. Mr. Rademacher, who took over as editor four weeks ago, said the Dec. 7 issue was the last regular issue in December. After running the advertise- ment, however, the newspaper published a special edition. It carried the paper's response to the advertisement and eight pages of letters about the ad. The campus Hillel sponsored a rally protesting the ad. Mr. Smith's ad was head- lined, "A Revisionist's View of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum." The ad quoted a Rop- er Organization poll, saying, "22 percent (some 25 millions!) of all adult Americans have doubts about the orthodox Holo- caust story — particularly about the alleged 'gassing chambers." The ad claimed the issue of whether the gas chambers existed should be re-opened be- cause many people have doubts, and it called into question other facts about the Holocaust. In a letter to Mr. Rademach- er March 18, Mr. Falbaum said Holocaust "revisionists" have a right to express their views, but newspaper editors have no obligation under the U.S. Con- stitution's First Amendment to print them. ❑ Pollard Supporters Let Down, Still Fight LESLEY PEARL STAFF WRITER W hen President Bill Clinton was elected, Dr. Sidney Leitson was hopeful. Now he's just disappointed. As president of the Michigan Committee for the Freedom of Jonathan Pollard, Dr. Leitson has made it his business to watch how the country's lead- ers deal with the fate of former U.S. naval analyst Jonathan Jay Pollard. Following Mr. Pollard's sen- tence to life in prison for spying for the State of Israel, groups like Dr. Leitson's sprung up around the country to fight the decision. President Clinton promised to look into the case. Last week, he denied a re- quest for pardon. "We're not surprised, but we're very disappointed. But we're not going to give up," Dr. Leitson said. Dr. Leitson said he is most dismayed that President Clin- ton went to the Justice De- partment for the decision. The opinions, Dr. Leitson said, were formed long ago and do not tru- ly reflect the leadership of At- torney General Janet Reno. Dr. Jonathan Jay Pollard: Request for pardon. Leitson would have liked to see independent counsel assigned to further investigate. "The Justice Department did this to him (Mr. Pollard). They offered a plea agreement and reneged. Of course they would come up with the same answer again," Mr. Leitson said. The Michigan Committee for the Freedom of Jonathan Pol- lard plans to continue to write letters and place calls to Pres- ident Clinton on behalf of Mr. Pollard. ❑
