Even the Avon Beauty Council, a team of
multi-ethnic professional makeup artists, as-
serts that "Real beauty shines from within."
And Victoria Jackson, CEO of her own mul-
timillion-dollar cosmetics company, says in
her new book, "Redefining Beauty" (Warner
Books), "You don't need to wear makeup...
We are beautiful without it."
But all these professional makeup experts
also agree that makeup can be used to en-
hance what's specially beautiful about you,
and the greatest prize is a boost in selfesteem.
'Wearing natural-looking makeup will help
make a difference in how you feel about your-
self," says Jackson. "Maybe its because wear-
ing makeup helps you reach your image
potential... Or maybe the answer is even more
straight-foward: Devoting a little extra atten-
tion to yourself feels good."

natural look. Jackson calls it the "No-Make-
up Look," the methods of which allow you to
"minimize or intensify colors to suit your
mood and personal style."
Younger women are using blues and vio-
lets in eye shadow more today than just a few
years ago. But the matte shades in neutrals,
such as bone, taupe or gray, are best for old-
er women, for they de-emphasize wrinkles.
A professional application of eye shadow
often uses three different shades, note An-
drew Scheman, M.D., and David L Severson
in the new "Cosmetics Buying Guide" from
Consumer Reports Books: "A light to medi-
um color will be used on the eyelids, a dark-
er color on the crease, and a lighter shade
under the eyebrows."
Lipsticks come in so many colors today,
it's mind-boggling at any cosmetics counter.
The colors you choose will depend on your
