Hats are still one of the fastest ways to set a fash-
ion mood. This season expect ethnic styles from
the ashram to the bazaar inspired fez hats, cro-
cheted skull caps, turban wraps and hoods. For
the more wistful romantics, there are large flop-
py hats or small-brimmed straws decorated with
crochet, lace and flowers.
Scarves are another quick wardrobe update.
Sheer scarves and wraps are the freshest way
to add change to the light layers of this season's
fashions. Look for iridescent scarves for added
shine and effect. Crinkled and sheer scarves
promise to be big accessory trends this season.
Lacy shawls, fringed piano shawls, crocheted
scarves and even handkerchiefs also comple-
ment the new romantic clothes.
And the one item that seems to be holding
up many of the fashions this year? Suspenders.
Teamed with skirts and pants, over T-shirts and
blouses, suspenders add a touch of distinct
menswear flair to fluid feminine styles. El

BELTS AND BAGS

As fashions soften up, so do belts and handbags.
New belts are narrow— about a half-inch to 1
inch wide. And since they are so pliable, they
can wrap around a long jacket or tunic with ease.
Rope belts are another casual approach to wrap-
ping up your wardrobe. Hip-slung belts trans-
late the ease of the season's soft clothes.
Soft, shoulder-slung handbags are back in
buttery suedes, matte or waterproof leathers.
A few handbags even shine in shimmery silver
leather. . Knapsacks, wallet bags, belt bags, duf-
fels and totes are other favorites. Watch for nat-
ural straw and woven leather bags to be big
