Fine and faux jewelry are in vogue.
Whether fine or faux, the right pieces of
jewelry finish off every fashion outfit of the
season.
Day or night, designers are thinking small
this season, scaling down accessories to pe-
tite proportions — from delicate drops and
dainty buttons to diminutive timepieces to sin-
gle-charm necklaces.
These diminutive delights come in shapes
as diverse as tennis rackets and teddies, cow-
boy boots and coyotes, peace symbols and
parrots, and are found not only on necklaces
but also on this season's hot metallic hoop ear-
rings.
Other popular earrings include buttons in
geometric, ethnic or nature-inspired shapes,
dainty gemstones dangles and convertibles
earrings that can be worn either as buttons,
dangles or hoops.
As for the wrist, bangles and cuffs are the
preferred bracelet silhouettes this season.
They range from the simplest of stackable sil-
ver or gold bangles to those adorned with
gems, and from smooth circular bands of na-
ture's colorful minerals to hand-painted wood-
en designs or Western-inspired carved silver

of fine jewelry, consider these tips from Jew-
elers of America, Inc., a trade organization:
*GOLD. When buying gold jewelry, look
for a karat mark as well as the manufacturer's
trademark stamped alongside it. This means
the manufacturer guarantees the karat mark.
*DIAMONDS. The four Cs — carat or size,
color, clarity and cut— determine the value
of a diamond. Savvy shoppers should ask a
jeweler to explain each of the four Cs in de-
tail before buying any diamond, then shop
around for similar stones to make sure it's a
good price.
*COLORED GEMSTONES. The same fac-
tors considered for diamonds— carat, color,
clarity and cut — determine the value of col-
ored gemstones.
*PEARLS. Look for a deep luster and iri-
descence. Also, seek clear— not dull or mud-
dy— color tones as well as surface perfection.
The more symmetrical the shape, the more
