The first step in making your nails look good
is to take care of them properly. Cutting or fil-
ing them wrong can lead to splitting, while
sometimes nails split because they're too brit-
tle and dry.
"In general, nails are less likely to split when
the corners are left relatively square, rather
than rounded," says the Cosmetics Buying
Guide from Consumer Reports Books. Filing
your nails is the best way to care for them,
since cutting can itself cause splitting.
If your nails are too dry from washing dish-
es too frequently, wear gloves, says the guide.
Also try using moisturizers on the nails and
cuticles after your hands have been in water.
"Overuse of nail enamel removers can also
lead to dry, brittle nails." Use nonacetone re-
movers that are less drying or apply another
layer of nail polish when mild chipping occurs
instead of removing the polish totally.
Nail hardeners can be tried if other ap-
proaches don't seem to help, advises the
guide.
Professional manicurists polish nails with
three coats — a base coat, the polish and a top
coat that increases gloss and prevents chip-
ping. You don't have to use three coats, but
the method keeps nails looking best longer.
Paula Begoun says in her "Cosmetics
Counter Update" newsletter, "How fast polish
chips seems to have more to do with the col-
or than the product line. For example, vivid
colors chip faster than pastel shades." She
says one of the best ways to keep nail polish
from chipping is to reapply the top coat each
day.
As for colors of nail polish, choose those
that go with your favorite lipsticks or those
that appear the most natural, whichever look
you prefer. You can wear nothing but sheer
gloss, or you can paint your nails red for that
night on the town.

SPRING STYLES

Accessories run the gamut, from bold to ro-
mantic.
From flip-flops to stiletto heels, the trends in
accessories this season are as up and down as
the hemlines.
As fashion flips and flops in different di-
rections in the '90s, so will the accessories that
complement them.
But accessories are still one of the most im-
portant ways savvy consumers put their own
stamp on their clothes. Here's a sample of
what's in store.
