FANCY FOOTWEAR

Footwear this season is a spring-board of dif
ferent styles, from platform sneakers to gladi-
ator sandals to ladylike high heels. It all depends
on your mood. You can at least put your com-
bat boots back in the closet for a few months.
This year try wingtips for a change.
For casual occasions, platform sneakers
or authentic Midas are your best bet; suede
mules and nubuck slides are also appropri-
ate. Even saddle oxfords and Mary Janes are
taking to the streets. Other casual options:
canvas espadrilles, fisherman shoes, lace-
up gladiator sandals, and yes, even rubber
thongs.
For dressier occasions, spectator pumps
in pale colors are turning up at the office, most
with a slightly chunky heel. For evening, scrap-
py sandals are "shoe-ins.'
Pale hosiery is a must-have as the weath-
er warms up, not in suntan tones, but in
creamy ivories and beiges. Texture is light
(lace at night) and matte. No shiny hose this
season.
If new sunglasses are in your fashion fu-
ture, try on a pair of vintage-inspired, wire-
rimmed glasses in the season's favorite
metallic, silver. 0

artist

As menswear softens up, so do the shoe fash-
ions. Here are some of the shoes stylish men
will be wearing to the office this season.
* Soft-soled business shoes. It's a look that
started in Europe and is quickly spreading to
corporate America The heavier-looking shoe
may be a little untraditional on the bottom, but
the top is usually a classic lace-up.
* Linen and leather combinations are gain-
ing in popularity. It's a vintage look right out
of the `30s, but the '90s man loves the look.
