`Inner Spirit'
At Sybaris
The Sybaris Gallery's next ex-
hibition, The Inner Spirit, will
run through April 22, bringing
together two artists — Kyoung
Ae Cho and Linda Kelly. Both
are inspired by nature and the
philosophy of non-Western cul-
tures. Both imbue their work
with their own inner spiritual-
ity and the effect is transcen-
dental.
Kyoung Ae Cho strives for a
symbiotic relationship with na-
ture. She even considers the act
of gathering her pine needles,
branches, stems and leaves
from the woods a ceremony.
The harmony and inner peace
she feels when reconstructing
these materials is probably re-
flective of her Eastern heritage
and her studies in textiles in her
homeland, Korea.
Linda Kelly's work also rep-
resents a sensitivity to nature
— one developed as a child
growing up on a farm. She
speaks of her forms reflecting
the human experience: the ten-
uous balance of routine and
wonderment, simplicity and
mystery, life and death, flesh
and spirit, body and soul. The
actual forms have their begin-
nings in baskets, which to Ms.
Kelly, embody so much of what
we are: soft, flexible, imperma-
nent, fibrous structures.
Gallery hours are Tuesday-
Saturday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m.;
Sybaris Gallery is at 202 East
Third, Royal Oak.
