"Jewish folk mu- sic has made a most powerful impression on me," he wrote. "I never tire of delighting in it; it's multi-faceted, it can appear to be happy while it is tragic." When the composer came across a book of Jewish poems that intrigued him, he began setting them to music. Eleven solos, duets and trios later, he had created, From Jewish Folk Poetry, one of the most haunt- ing and expressive of all mod- ern song-cycles. Set for a soprano, alto and tenor in vary- ing combinations, the songs were originally scored for piano accompaniment. They were or- chestrated in 1964, 16 years af- ter Shostakovich completed the piano version. The emotional richness of these Russian-Jewish texts is conveyed in music that is com- pelling in all its aspects.
