from implicating themselves
while testifying before the

One man asking to be
heard by the panel is reserve
officer Shlomo Idelstein. On
the morning of the killings,
Mr. Idelstein said, he receiv-
ed an urgent phone call from
Mr. Goldstein's wife,
Miriam.
Miriam Goldstein, Mr.
Idelstein said, asked him to
intercept her husband,
whom she said had not gone
to the Tomb of the Patriar-
chs — a site holy to Jews and
Muslims alike — simply to
pray.
Mr. Idelstein tried to
locate Mr. Goldstein, but
failed to reach him on an
emergency beeper.
Mr. Idelstein has written
to the panel asking to give
testimony about the month
of reserve service he spent in
Kiryat Arba, where Mr.
Goldstein lived. ❑

MAKING THE CONNECTION

One way those with hearing losses find
to augment the performance of their hear-
ing instruments is to use a personal ampli-
fier system. This stand-alone device is
battery powered and can be outfitted with
a microphone to capture the sound of a
speaker, radio, or 1V. It may also be plugged
directly into TV's and other audio devices,
including modular telephones. The ampli-
fied sound is then carried by wire to the
user's earphones or personal hearing in-
strument. The primary benefit of this type
of assistive listening device (ALD) is that
it brings the amplified audio signal direct-
ly to the users ear without interference.
Some behind-the-ear and most in-the-ear
instruments do not have direct audio input
connections to accept audio jacks.
