Seekers

The number ofjob-seekers in Is-
rael dropped by 7.6 percent in
February, the Ministry of La-
bor and Social Affairs an-
nounced.
The raw data shows a drop
from 118,800 job-seekers in
January to 111,600, but the
Employment Service factors in
seasonal expectations and the
adjusted figures show a change
from 116,500 to 107,600, a de-
cline of 8,900.
While the decline is good
news, the jobless situation is not
improving to the same degree
in development towns.
The job situation has im-
proved for women, according to
the figures available to the Em-
ployment Service. At the be-
ginning of 1993, women were
51 percent of the job-seekers,
a number that climbed to 60
percent last September and last
month dropped to 55.4 percent,
compared to 56 percent in Jan-
uary.
Not all job-seekers go
through the Employment Ser-
vice, so it is difficult to evaluate
its figures. The government ser-
vice has seen a marked drop in
new immigrant job-seekers over
1993, from 32,200 at the begin-
ning of last year down to 11,300
in January 1994 and 9,800 last
month.
Last month the service had
12.3 percent fewer job offers,
with some 18,300 jobs available,
compared to 20,900 in January.
The Employment Service
matched job-seekers with job of-
fers 34.4 percent of the time in
the last quarter of 1993, com-
pared to a 25.8 percent success
rate the previous quarter.

Plane Leased To
Air France

Arkia has signed an agreement
to lease its Boeing 747-200
freighter to Air France until
February 2000.
The Israeli company an-
nounced that the plane, which
it purchased for $57 million, will
be leased for $8.8 million a year
to be paid quarterly.
Arkia bought the jumbo with
the help of $51.2 million in for-
eign bank loans, using the plane
as collateral. The company
must repay this loan within six
years by quarterly payments.
In effect, the company state-
ment said, Arkia bought the
jumbo for only $6 million of its
own money.
In addition to the jumbo,
> Arkia has leased a Boeing 737
to the U.S. carrier Atlns Air and
a Boeing 727 to another foreign
airline. El
