"My Mommy And Daddy Got Their Mortgage At World Wide Financial!" "The communication problem is difficult," he said. "I have a basic personality flaw of a lack of patience. I've had to develop a level of patience. It takes a long time for them to build trust. Most men would not have lasted as long as I did. They would have resigned out of frus- tration." When he says it takes pa- tience, he means it. As he tours the floor of the manufacturing plant, Mr. Shaw says it took nine years of persuasion before the Pilot company in Japan agreed to manufacture in the United States. One problem Mr. Shaw hasn't had with the Japanese is anti-Semitism. He believes that reports of anti-Semitism in Japan have been exaggerated. "I've had no experiences with anti-Semitism in Japan, and with my background I'm very sensitive. Everybody I come into contact with knows rm Jewish and accepts it," he said. In the United States, Mr. Shaw says the best way to com- bat the kind of anti-Semitism that haunted his early child- hood is to fight it. He is ex- tremely active in the Anti- Defamation League of B'nai B'rith, along with a list of oth- er Jewish and general causes in his Connecticut community. Unlike some who work close- ly with the Japanese, Mr. Shaw does not preach or practice Japanese business techniques. He does not believe that the much-vaunted Japanese way of running a company crosses cul- tures very well. "There is nothing Japanese about this place," he says. "We run this business as an Ameri- can company. It is to Pilot's cred- it that they have the gutsiness to allow it to run this way." ❑ Housing Sales Brisk Housing sales in Israel's 24 largest cities were particular- ly brisk in the last quarter of 1993, jumping by a third over the previous quarter and total- ing 4,082 units, the Central Bu- reau of Statistics reported. This increase was accompa- nied by a 15 percent rise in the number of units for sale, lead- ing to a 5 percent increase in the inventory of unsold housing to 5,820 units. In the fourth quarter of last year, sales of new housing rose in Jerusalem, Ashdod, Hadera, Holon, Kfar Saba, Netanya, Petah-Tikva, Rishon Lezion, Rehovot, Ramat Gan and Ra'anana. ❑ DANIELLE ELYZE DULBERG 3% YEARS MICHIGAN'S LEADER IN MORTGAGE LENDING • Loan sizes to 1.5 million. • No-documentation loans available. • Convenient applications via lap top computer in your home office. • Special programs available for "bruised credit" applicants! • We close loans FAST!
