Scientist Claims
Cancer Breakthrough

Haifa — A former Yale
scientist working in Israel
claims to have made a major
breakthrough in the devel-
opment of a cure for cancer.
Rigorous tests carried out
on live animals and on
human cancer cell cultures
have proved overwhelming-
ly successful, he says.
The substance used in the
experiments is of human
origin and marks a totally
new approach to cancer
treatment, according to its
discoverer, Dr. Eitan
Barnea, 41, a gynecologist
and reproductive en-
docrinologist.
Dr. Barnea was an assis-
tant professor at Yale Uni-
versity where he was among
the first to work on the "test
tube" fertilization process.
He founded and heads the
Feto-Placenta Endocrine
Center (bio-hormone resear-
ch) located in the Rappaport
Institute for Medical Science
here.
Dr. Barnea was awarded
the 1989 scientist-of-the-
year Elkeles Prize for major
advancements in the field of
infertility on the recommen-

dation of the Health Min-
istry's chief scientist.
Dr. Barnea also invented
the "Superfusion" machine,
which mimics the human
reproductive process, follow-
ing implantation of the em-
bryo through the first three
months of pregnancy.
In reporting on his find,
Dr. Barnea would not give
details. The entire project
has been wrapped in secrecy.
"It appears that we have
discovered a form of human-
origin material which can
combat and eradicate
cancer," he said. "The com-
pound we have isolated, and
further developed, has been
tested on animals injected
with human cancer cells and
has been found to prevent
the development of cancer,
in all cases."
The tests were performed
in renowned, independent
laboratories in what is
known in scientific jargon as
"double blind, controlled
studies," he said. "This
means that the scientists in-
volved were unaware of the
identity of the substances
they were using and had no
indication of the expected
results."
For the purpose of the ex-
periments involving live
animals, "nude" mice were

used. The "nude" in this
case refers to the deliberate
irradiation of the mice to
destroy their immune
systems.
The mice were then in-
jected with extremely
virulent types of human
cancerous cells, including
fibrosarcoma, a cancer of the
connective tissue such as
bone and muscle.
After an incubation period,
the mice were then injected
with several compounds, all
of them similar, but only one
of them containing the anti-
cancer substance, he ex-
plained.
"All the mice which did
not receive the anti-cancer
compound developed cancer
and died within two weeks,"
said Dr. Barnea. "In sharp
contrast, all the mice in-
jected with the anti-cancer
compound made a complete
recovery, although only
small quantities of the corn-
pound were used. No adverse
side-effects were seen.
"In order to confirm the
results of the 'in vivo' ex-
periments and again in a
double-blind controlled fash-
ion, the anti-cancer com-
pund, as well as the other
controls, were added to cul-
tures of human cancer cells.
"These cells included
