"It's an opportunity for
women and their families to
come out and support the idea
of awareness," Ms. Lester said.
"A lot of people come in memo-
ry or in honor of someone. It's
also an opportunity for breast
cancer survivors to come out
and be recognized. There's a
strong feeling of solidarity
among them."
Ms. Medsker got involved
with the Race For A Cure be-
cause she believes that facing
the issue head-on saves lives.
In her case, a mammogram
wasn't enough to detect a can-
cerous lump in her breast. In-
stead, she paid close attention
to a sharp and persistent pain,
later diagnosed as symptomatic
of malignancy.
Ignoring the pain or failing
to consult a doctor, would have
been her death knell, she said.
"If you want to live, you
better know. A lot of women
don't want chemotherapy be-
cause they worry about losing
their hair. Should we really be
that vain? Women need to get
a grip on the issue instead of
waiting until it's too late. Life
beats the alternative," Ms.
Medsker said.

The Susan G. Komen Breast
Cancer Foundation was found-
ed by Ms. Komen's sister, Nan-
cy Brinker. The women, both
Jewish, suffered from breast
cancer. Before Ms. Komen died
in 1980 at the age of 36, her sis-
ter promised to do something to
fight the disease.
Ms. Brinker established the
Foundation in Dallas. Largely
through its yearly Races For
The Cure, this year held in 46
cities across the nation, the
Foundation raises money for
breast cancer research, educa-
tion, screening and treatment
programs.
In Detroit, the event is pre-
sented by the Meyer L. Prentis
Comprehensive Cancer Center
of Metropolitan Detroit, the
Michigan Cancer Foundation
and the Detroit Medical Center
of Wayne State University.
