Nursery Begins With
Farewell To Shabbat

ery-school students of
Temple Emanu-El are
greeted by dimmed lights
and twisted candles.
Tiny voices sing out Sha-vu-
a-toy. .
They join together in two cir-
cles — the older children form-
ing an outside sphere with the
younger children inside —
holding hands, saying good-bye
to Shabbat.
Each Havdalah service, done
first thing every-other Monday
morning, a different class car-
ries the assorted spice boxes
from one face to the next.
Nursery school co-directors
Rena Cohen and Michaelyn Sil-
verman lead the prayers.
"Traditionally, Havdalah
doses Shabbat when three stars
appear in the sky Saturday
night. Because we are not to-
gether at that time, we do Hav-
dalah first thing Monday
morning. It's a fresh way to
start the week," Ms. Silverman
said.
Ms. Silverman said the pro-
gram was implemented follow-
ing a teachers' workshop,
sponsored by the Agency for
Jewish Education, where Shab-

bat symbols were discussed.
As follow-up, some classes
have made Havdalah can-
dles; all have created their own
spice boxes.
The addition of Havdalah,
Ms. Silverman said, rounds out
the Jewish flavor of Emanu-El's
pm-school education. Also, par-

quickly mimic and learn
prayers and traditions — usu-

`This is definitely a parochial-
school setting. We don't
celebrate secular holidays. In-
stead, we focus on oral Hebrew
and Jewish holidays. Fridays
we are inundated with the
music, food and greetings of
Shabbat," Ms. Silverman said.
"This is no token approach to
the holidays. It's a way of
life."
