"Why Be Jewish?", Rabbi
William Gershon of Congrega-
tion Shaarey Zedek, and class
participants will explore what
makes Judaism unique and dif-
ferent from all other religions.

For College

Applications are now being ac-
cepted from college students in-
terested in applying for
interest-free loans through the
Jewish Educational Loan Ser-
vice (JELS).
Administered through Jew-
ish Vocational Service (JVS)
and Hebrew Free Loan Associ-
ation, and coordinated by the
Jewish Federation of Metro-
politan Detroit, the program is
available to metro Detroit area

"Kitchen Table" is an oppor-
tunity to discuss the role as a
mother with other moms and
professionals April 13-May 11,
9:30-11 a.m. The morning ses-
sons for moms and their babies,

women engaged in the chal-
lenge of contemporary positive
parenting. Topics include: in-
fant CPR, appropriate books
and games, choosing childcare,
infant massage and home
safety.

Independence
Picnic Planned

A picnic celebrating Israel In-
dependence Day will be held
April 17 on the grounds of the
Washtenaw County Jewish
Community Center, Ann Arbor.
The event will begin with a
commemoration of Yom
Hazikaron at 2:30 p.m. followed
by the Yom Ha'atzma'ut cele-
bration at 3 p.m. Sponsored by
the Jewish Federation of
Washtenaw County/United
Jewish Appeal, the Jewish
Community Center, Temple
Beth Emeth and Beth Israel
Congregation, the picnic in-
cludes singing, dancing, bal-
loons and birthday cake.
The local celebration will in-
clude a children's parade (bring
your children's trikes!), cooper-
ative games, relay races, mak-
ing Israeli flags, singing and
Israeli folk dancing.
Participants are encouraged
to bring their own picnic meals.
