Are Better!

Included are illustrations
of Haggadot, seder plates,
Kiddush cups and Afikomen
pouches. Paintings, ranging
from the 18th to 20th cen-
tury, trace Pesach customs
that have been handed down
through the generations.
Among the illustrations in-
cluded are the German Bird's
Head Haggadah, the Span-
ish Golden Haggadah and a
contemporary Haggadah
with paintings by Ben Shahn.
The text of The Art of
Passover was written by
Rabbi Stephan Parnes, who
provides commentary on the
symbols in the pieces, and
Bonni-Dara Michaels and Ga-
briel Goldstein of the Yeshiva
University Museum, who
consider the works from the
art historian's perspective.

n 1972, Kim Chernin ran
away to Israel. She left a
husband and a young
daughter.
Twenty years later, she be-
gan to write about her un-
usual experiences in Israel —
her life on a kibbutz and her
passionate adventures. These
memories have now been
compiled into the book
Crossing the Border: An
Erotic Journey (Ballan-
tine).
Of one romance, Ms.
Chernin writes:

life before? That sudden dis-

brooding at the edge of possi-
bility. You gave me more than
your body; you gave me more
than you knew you possessed.
Ms. Chernin is a psycho-
analytic consultali:-, and long-
time feminist whose other
works include The Cbsession,
The Hungry Self and Rein-
venting Eve.

Jacob Neusner offers a con-
versation between a Jewish
scholar and the Christian
messiah in A Rabbi Talks
with Jesus: An Intermil-
lennial, Interfaith Ex-
change (Doubleday).
Professor Neusner, of the
religious studies department
at the University of South
Florida, imagines in his book
that he is a young rabbi in
ancient Galilee. He hears
Jesus' Sermon on the Mount
and other teachings of the
Gospel — and remains un-
convinced.
A graduate of the Jewish
Theological Seminary, Pro-
fessor Neusner has published
more than 500 books on
