The dedication ceremony
also used music to remember
those who died. The choir of
Temple Beth Emeth performed
several songs, including
"S'dremlen Faygl oif di
Tsvaygn" (Birds Are Dreaming,
on the Twigs), a haunting lul-
laby to a parentless child that
was composed in Thereisen-
stadt.
As the some 500 people at the
ceremony moved outdoors for
the unveiling of the sculpture,
they could hear the carillon
from the university's landmark
bell tower playing 'Threnody"
(Song of Lamentation), taken
from a cantata on the Holocaust
composed by Michigan music
professor Elwood Derr.
U-M president James Dud-
erstadt accepted the gift of the
memorial from Dr. Robert Levy,
president of the Holocaust
Memorial Foundation. Dr. Levy
quoted from Lincoln's Gettys-
berg Address: "It is rather for
us to be here dedicated to the
great task remaining before us
— that from these honored
dead we take increased devo-
tion to that cause to which they
gave the last full measure of
devotion."
