Midrasha Offers
Study Programs

The Midrasha Center for Adult
Jewish Learning will offer a va-
riety of adult Jewish learning
programs during the weeks be-
tween the holidays of Passover
and Shavuot, which is tradi-
tionally a period for structured
adult Jewish study.
Classes are designed to ac-
commodate different schedules;
some are at lunchtime; many
are in the evening. All of the fol-
lowing classes and programs
will be held at Midrasha in the
Agency for Jewish Education
building, 21550 West 12 Mile
Road, Southfield. There is a
charge.
On three Wednesday after-
noons, April 6, 13 and 20,
Midrasha will present a lunch
and learn series taught by Rab-
bi Aaron Bergman, rabbi-in-
residence at Hillel Day School
and rabbi at Congregation Beth
Abraham Hillel Moses. His sub-
ject will be "Pirkei Avot
Themes: An Introduction to
Avot D'Rabbi Natan."
This series will study and
compare the two texts, as well
as explore the world of the Tal-
mudic period that produced
them. On each session date,
kosher lunch will be available
at noon, and the study session
will take place from 12:30 to
1:30 p.m. Adult learners may
sign up for the series with or
without lunch, but reservations
are a must.
"Hebrew Poetry from the
Golden Age of Spain" will be the
subject of a three-part text
study series taught by commu-
nity educator, poet, and trans-
lator Edward Codish, on three
Monday nights, April 11, 18 and
25. Classes will meet from 7:30
to 9 p.m. This course will trace
the development of Hebrew
poetry in Spain from its secular
.Arabic roots to Yehuda Haley's
poems of longing for Zion.
Students may register for the
series or for individual session
dates. Texts studied will be in
English and Hebrew. No knowl-
edge of Hebrew is required.
"Israel and Syria: Roots of
Conflict and Prospects for
Peace" will be the subject of a
three-part lecture series on
Thursday nights April 14, 21
and 28, taught by Dr. Zach Lev-
ey of Hebrew University. Dr.
Levey is currently a visiting
scholar at the University of
Michigan-Aim Arbor. The lec-
tures will take place from 7:30
to 9 p.m. Adult learners may
sign up for the entire series or
individual sessions. Dr. Levey
will examine the Israeli-Syrian
relationship, beginning with the

British and French Mandates
in the Middle East, through
Israel's War of Independence,
to the present. Students will be
expected to read some academic
material which will be provided
as background.
Two dinner-time study ses-
sions with Midrasha's scholar-
in-residence Rabbi Rod
Glogower will be held on Tues-
day evenings, May 3 and 10, on
themes relating to revelation
and the holiday of Shavuot.
Dinner will be available at 5:30
p.m. with study session follow-
ing from 6:15 to 7:45 p.m. For
the convenience of adult learn-
ers who have varying work and
personal schedules, they may
register for the series with or
without dinner or for individual
study session dates with or
without dinner
Rabbi Craig Allen of Con-
gregation Beit Kodesh in Livo-
nia will teach a two-part series
titled "The Jewish Creative
Process" on two Thursday
evenings, May 12 and 19, with
each session running from 7:30
to 9 p.m. Rabbi Allen, who is
also a composer and jazz musi-
cian, will discuss "Torah As
Mantra" on May 12 and "Jazz
From Sinai" on May 19. Musi-
cal demonstrations will be
included in each program.

Leadership Network of B'nai
B'rith has created a 24-hour
hotline, 817-INFO, for up-to-
date information on upcoming
events.
The next general meeting
will be April 13 at 7:30 p.m. at
Willow Park Apartments club-
house, 28675 Franklin Road,
Southfield. Nominations and
declarations for upcoming ex-
ecutive offices and chair posi-
tions will take place.
