the artist searches for ways to
make three-dimensional forms
that will be extensions of the
physical presence of the wear-
er.
She has always used non-
conventional materials and her
inspiration comes from Japan-
ese art and the very Western
ideas of Minimalism. Using
Teflon, aluminum, rubber and
steel in combination with pre-
cious materials like gold, silver
and stones, Ms. Mason layers,
bundles, weaves, wraps and
knots carefully defined shapes
and forms into controlled and
minimal designs.
The color black is always con-
stant in the artist's work. A
symbol of the East, Ms. Mason
uses it to add mystery, elegance
and serenity to her pieces. In
addition to the tubular shapes
of Samurai swords and the belts
worn around the waists of
Sumo wrestlers, she is fasci-
nated by the complex textile
patterns and designs that are a
rich part of Japanese heritage.
This imagery appears in her
silk-screened, roller-printed and
etched metal brooches.

Left to its own devices, earwax (cerumen)
will gradually be forced from the ear canal due
to movement of the jaw. There is no need to
remove it by poking around inside the ear
canal with a cotton swab. The use of this and
other probes may only serve to push earwax
up against the eardrum, impair hearing, irri-
tate the lining of the ear canal, or even per-
forate the eardrum. Left in place, earwax
protects the eardrum against dust, as well as
against such potential sources of infection as
fungi and bacteria. If there is a slight block-
age due to earwax buildup, mineral oil works
as well as any of the over-the-counter earwax
softeners to coax wax out. Hydrogen perox-
ide and other products that fizz should be
avoided because they might cause pressure
to build up which could harm the eardrum.
Excess wax can also be loosened by
gently squirting warm water into the ear canal.
