name be erased), not have a
posthumous victory." The term
yimach sh'mo is an epithet tra-
ditionally reserved for individ-
uals such as Haman, Hitler,
Stalin and the like, villainous
arch-enemies who attempted to
annihilate the Jewish people.
There is ample evidence to
infer that Dr. Baruch Goldstein
acted in defense of the Jewish
people, most particularly of the
beleaguered West Bank set-
tlers. In fact, the New York
Times reported that hundreds
of Arabs were chanting the
words "Slaughter the Jews!"
outside the Cave of Machpelah
the night before Dr. Goldstein
opened fire.
Clearly, his deed must be dif-
ferentiated from that of a mass
murderer spurred on to random
acts of grisly violence by de-
viantly pathological motives.
Those who knew Dr. Gold-
stein considered him to be a
man of outstanding character
and moral conviction. It is not
my intention to address the is-
sue of whether or not he was
justified in his actions at the He-
bron Mosque; there is certain-
ly ample debate on the issue
and a wide diversity of opinions.
The issue here is that the high-
ly pejorative term yimach sh'mo
should not be linked with the
name of a person who acted
with heroic intention, in what
he perceived as defense of his
fellow Jews....

The Tragedy

We'd like to

Because of the tragedy in He-
bron, the timing of a full-page
ad in the New York Times on
March 1 was very important.
The ad said, "We Never For-
get Our Friends," and repeated
a New York Times article which
appeared Feb. 8 regarding the
rescue by convoy of 300 Bosni-
ans by the American Joint Dis-
tribution Committee. Among
them was an entire family re-
sponsible for saving the lives of
many Jews during the Nazi oc-
cupation.

Anti-Semites
Are Wrong Focus

I would like to add my voice to
those protesting The Jewish
News' practice of constantly
publishing the statements of
various anti-Semitic personal-
ities.
It seems to me that no other
American religious or ethnic
community is as preoccupied
with its enemies as the Jewish
community. This preoccupation
is reflected in the pages of The

Jewish News. In recent weeks,
Jewish News readers have been
subjected to major stories that
profiled hate-mongers ranging
from a member of the Nation of
Islam to an apparently dis-
turbed Jewish American who
supports neo-Nazi groups.
Another recent article re-
ported the anti-Israel state-
ments of an Israeli Jewish
woman who identifies with
Palestinian nationalism. The
lack of any apparent news val-
ue in especially the latter two
cases suggests that The Jewish
News is seeking out such stories
for publication.
If The Jewish News' goal in
devoting so much of its limited
space to anti-Semitic themes is
to spur action in the Jewish
community, I feel that it is bad-
ly missing the target, especial-
ly with respect to younger
readers. Speaking from per-
sonal experience, I can say that
many young Jews today reject
the notion that they should be
active in the Jewish communi-
ty because of real or feared anti-
Semitism. Rather, they are
looking for reasons to feel pos-
itive about their Jewish her-
itage, history and religion.
With so much emphasis be-
ing placed upon the hate-filled
statements of even the most in-
significant anti-Semitic per-
sonalities, any other, more
positive, message that The Jew-
ish News may be trying to com-
municate is in danger of being
overwhelmed.
I agree that it is important
for Jews to know who their en-
emies are. Our community al-
ready has organizations like the
Anti-Defamation League and
the American Jewish Commit-
tee that track anti-Semitic or-
ganizations, activities and
attitudes. Let those watchdogs
sound the alarm when needed
and let The Jewish News report
on such matters when truly
newsworthy.
Let the rest of us, meanwhile,
including The Jewish News, fo-
cus the bulk of our attention on
the critical task of building a
stronger, healthier and more
confident Jewish American
community.
