men come here because they
have a personal problem or
need," says Haim. "In many
cases it's one they keep to
themselves for years until
they can afford to do
something about it. Even
then they might come in with
a hat or motorcycle helmet
on, so that no one will
recognize them.."
"There is definitely a
stigma attached to epilation,"
agrees Ms. Drorit. "It's
assumed that all men who
undergo it are either gay or
crazy. Actually, we have a
very varied clientele. Some
are teen-agers, and others are
married men. We even have
pensioners."
Be that as it may, not all
cosmeticians are standing in
line to help men with their
hairy problems. Bracha
Ordentlicht, whose Or Adin
(Gentle Skin) salon has been
in business for 43 years, in-
sists that "smooth skin is a
womanly asset, not a man's.
There's nothing wrong with a
man who has hair on his
chest."
"When a girl has a problem
of excess hair growth, it's
perfectly acceptable for her to
consult a skin doctor and
then go to a cosmetician,"
says Ms. Ohayon. "But for a
man it's a whole different
ballgame. That's where peo-
ple like me come in, helping
them overcome their fears
and convincing them that it's
O.K."

Health Ends
Nazi Case

New York (JTA) — Word
that the German govern-
ment has ended all further
prosecution of Latvian war
collaborator Boleslays
Maikovskis because of his
age and health has left those
who prosecuted him or
followed his case angered
and frustrated.
Last week, a German
judge terminated all judicial
proceedings against
Maikovskis, saying the 90-
year-old man's heart condi-
tion could kill him.
Moreover, his attorney
asked the German court to
compensate Maikovskis for
time spent in prison.
A retired carpenter who
lived quietly for many years
in Mineola, N.Y., Maikov-
skis was ordered deported to
the Soviet Union in 1987 to
stand trial for war crimes in
Latvia during World War H.
A court in Riga, Latvia,
had sentenced him to death
in absentia in 1965 after
convicting him of killing

20,000 Latvian Jews. ❑
