Guelfo Zamboni Rome (JTA) — Guelfo Zamboni, an Italian diplomat who saved nearly 300 Jews during World War II by giving them false pa- pers, died in Rome at the age of 97. "The State of Israel salutes with emotion and admiration the memory of Guelfo Zamboni, who during the most difficult hours, knew how to stand up to barbarity and save hundreds of Jews from death," a statement from the Israeli Embassy in Rome said, following Mr. Zam- boni's death. In 1943, Mr. Zamboni was Italian consul in Salonika, Greece, when the city's 55,000 Jews came under the harsh per- secution of the Nazi occupiers, who began deportations to Auschwitz in March of that year. He was able to get docu- ments that enabled 280 Jews to flee to Athens, which was un- der Italian military occupation, thus saving them from depor- tation. In October 1992, Israeli Am- bassador to Italy Avi Pazner conferred on Mr. Zamboni the medal of honor from Yad Va- hem, and 280 trees were plant- ed in Jerusalem — one for each of the Jews he saved. "Mr. Zamboni was one of those Italians who, in the dark- est hour, remembered they had hearts," said Tullia Zevi, presi- dent of the Union of Italian Jew- ish Communities. "For this, we honor him and remember him with great af- fection and respect," she said. The first American Jewish boxer to become a world champion was Abraham At- tell, who won the World Featherweight title in 1901 and held it for the next 11 years.
