The Midrasha Center for Adult
Jewish Learning will present a
lecture series titled "Israel and
Syria: Roots of Conflict and
Prospects for Peace" on three
Thursday nights beginning
April 14, taught by Dr. Zach
Levey of Hebrew University.
Dr. Levey is a visiting schol-
ar at the University of Michi-
gan-Ann Arbor. The lectures will take place 7:30-9 p.m.
April 14, 21, and 28 at the Midrasha, in the Agency for Jewish Education building,
21550 West 12 Mile Road in Southfield.
Adult learners may sign up for the entire series or individual sessions. There is a
charge, which includes photocopied study materials.
Dr. Levey will examine the Israeli-Syrian relationship beginning with the British
and French Madates in the Middle East, through Israel's War of Independence, to the
present.
Adult learners who register for this mini-course will be asked to read some academ-
ic material which will be provided as background. Additional source materials will be
recommended for those who wish to read more on the subject.

New Americans
Are Bar Mitzvah

Two hundred residents, board members and families
attended Prentis Federation Apartments very special
first time ever event on March 5, when Dmitriy Kirzh-
ner, Petr Krimer, Isaak Milman, and Boris Rozenblat,
all new Americans from Russia who reside at Prentis
Federation Apartments in Oak Park, were called to the
Torah for a bar mitzvah.
Rabbi David Nelson and Cantor Samuel Greenbaum
from Congregation Beth Shalom met with these four
men to prepare them for the special day. The event was
sponsored by the Resident Council of Prentis Federa-
tion Apartments.
Frieda Kolb, president of the Resident Council, and
Elizaveta Polevaya, vice president of Resident Rela-
tions, presented the men with their talleitot (prayer
shawls) and kepot (head coverings). Each of the men
presented his feelings about having this opportunity to
be called to the Torah in America; the comments were
translated by Natasha Garbuzova.
