Meeting Highlights
Operation Exodus
To dramatize Operation Exo-
dus, the campaign to help leave
the former Soviet Union, Yair
Tzaban, Israel's minister of
absorption, will address a De-
troit audience on March 24.
Contributions to the com-
munity-wide effort pay for air-
lifting the immigrants and
whatever possessions they can
carry out with them. Most go to
Israel, where they receive ab-
sorption assistance, from hous-
ing and food to language
instruction and job training. De-
troit's local Resettlement Ser-
vice will receive a portion of
funds for temporary assistance
to immigrants who come.
To complete the task by May,
the United Jewish Appeal must
meet its goal of $1.2 billion.
American Jewry has raised
$850 million so far; Detroit con-
tributed $22 million for Oper-
ation Exodus I, and $6.6 million
so far toward Operaton Exodus
II.
Mr. Tzaban will highlight the
situation of the immigrants who
have resettled in Israel on
March 24 at the Max M. Fisher
Building.
The 6 p.m. dinner will be
followed by a phonathon for Op-
eration Exodus and the Allied
Jewish Campaign.
There is no charge for the
March 24 program. For reser-
vations or information, call
Andrea Polk at the Allied
Jewish Campaign, 642-4260.
