BORENSTEIN'S SUPER PASSOVER SPECIALS "We are very upset and frustrated by the unilateral decision of the police au- thorities to evacuate Jews from the Kotel (the Western Wall)," Mayor Ehud Olmert told Israel Radio. The Wall, Mr. Olmert said, is "the symbol of everything that characterizes Jewish life in this part of the world, the most important place." As such, he said, it is "the last place" Jews should be barred from as a security measure. He said he would do every- thing in his power to prevent The plaza in front of the Western Wall was closed for an hour. the closure of the plaza again. Meanwhile, according to reports, the PLO Executive has decided to stick to its demands that the settlers in the territories be disarmed and an international armed presence be established in the territories as a condition of resuming the autonomy talks. But Foreign Minister Shimon Peres has rejected the demand for an armed international presence. "There is no assurance that foreign observers will add to security. On the con- trary," he told Israel Televi- sion. "We may discover that foreign observers will become a target for Hamas," the Islamic fundamentalist movement staunchly oppos- ed to the peace process. ❑ De Klerk Reassures Jews H Pretoria (JTA) — With only two months before South Africa's first non-racial gen- eral election, South African President and Nobel Peace Laureate F.W. de Klerk has given a message of en- couragement to the Jewish community. "Room and opportunity should be ensured for the various language, cultural and religious groups to re- main true to what is impor- tant to them," de Klerk said in an interview. He added that the various groups that comprise South Africa must be able "to cherish that which is dear to them and to practice in the religious field and in other fields. I I GRAPE JUICE 1'/2 liter Hezbollah Attacks Jerusalem (JTA) — The virulently anti-Israel Hez- bollah movement has laun- ched a series of attacks in the southern Lebanon security zone that resulted in the deaths of six soldiers from the South Lebanon Army, Israel's ally in the re- gion. Two Lebanese civilians were also killed in the latest assaults, which left at least 10 SLA soldiers wounded. The slain civilians, believ- ed to be a married couple, had been driving in the area and were believed to have been kidnapped at the edge of the zone. Their bodies were found riddled with bullets. The latest attacks by the pro-Iranian Hezbollah forces have incurred the highest casualties in the security zone in six months, Israel Television reported. The SLA soldiers were killed by roadside bombs that had been planted at three sites in the central and eastern portions of the buffer zone which Israel estab- lished in southern Lebanon. Israeli and SLA forces retaliated by firing artillery and mortar at Hezbollah strongholds north of the security zone. ❑ Nazi Investigations London (JTA) — Britain's Home Office minister has told the House of Lords that the country's War Crimes Act will, in all probability, die "a natural death" if no prosecutions can be initiated against alleged former Nazis living in Britain. Earl Ferrers made the assessment after a former Conservative minister, Lord Boyd-Carpenter, suggested that the expenditure to date of $8 million on war crimes investigations without any resulting prosecutions showed "what a nonsense the whole operation had been." Lord Boyd-Carpenter was greeted with loud cheers. Ferrers replied that the expenditure had been in- curred because Parliament had mandated carrying out the investigations through its passage of the War Crimes Act. Ferrers said 27 cases of alleged Nazis are still being investigated.
