Letters pour in to the International Jewish Pen-Pal Service's post office box.

Pen Pal Club
Key To Friendship

CAROL NOVIS SPEICAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS

H

as today's world of
electronic communi-
cation ruined the art
of the simple social letter?
Not for Yehiel Limor, an
Israeli journalist, until
recently editor of the well-
known Hebrew woman's
magazine AT (YOU). Mr.
Limor is convinced that
letter-writing can be a key to
friendship, understanding
and even, perhaps, mat-
chmaking between Jews of all
ages all over the world.
To foster those kinds of
bonds, Mr. Limor has recent-
ly started a non-profit
organization called the Inter-
national Jewish Pen-Pal Ser-
vice. The response, even at
this initial stage, has been
more enthusiastic than he
ever dreamed of.
It all started when Mr.
Limor happened to publish a
letter in AT from a reader
looking for a foreign pen-pal.
"I know that a few magazines
publish these kinds of letters,
but I never expected the kind
of response we got." Letters
began pouring in from other
prospective pen-pal seekers,
from as far afield as Iceland,
Nigeria, Turkey and East
Germany in a flood that still
baffles Limor. "AT is publish-
ed only in Hebrew. To this
day, I don't know how readers
from so many far-flung places
discovered us," he says. But
the response convinced him
that people of all ages were
searching for a way to corn-
municate on a person-to-
person basis.
That was the start of the In-
ternational Jewish Pen-Pal

Service (IJPS). To help
organize and run it, Mr.
Limor established an
organizational committee
formed of people involved in
communications, education
and public service. Their aim
was to create a grassroots
channel for communication
. within the Jewish world by
fostering letter writing.
lb publicize the new service,
the organization placed small
advertisements in various
publications, both in Hebrew
and English and wrote to
Jewish federations and stu-
dent bodies all over the world.
"We weren't sure if our small
advertisements would draw a
reply, because the dominant

seems to be fax and the
telephone rather than the let-
ter. But hundreds wrote in,
and many sent checks, even
though we didn't ask for con-
tributions. "We received let-
ters from youngsters, from
singles hoping to meet so-
meone and from older people."
Mr. Limor also found that
this was a project that
everyone approved of, in-
cluding the Israel Foreign
Ministry. "Even post office of-
ficials thought it was a great
idea and created a special box
