Hearing Aid Specialist

Because more than 90 percent of babies
with hearing impairments are born to par-
ents with normal hearing, parents should
be aware of risk factors other than family
history which put their newborns at risk for
hearing problems. They include: the moth-
er's contraction of German measles, a high
fever, or a viral infection associated with
hearing loss (such as cytomegalovirus or
herpes) during her pregnancy; a birth that
is premature or complicated with respira-
tory distress; alcoholic intake during preg-
nancy; a newborn with severe jaundice; or
a baby's exposure to ototoxic drugs (those
that negatively impact upon hearing and
balance), which include certain antibiotics
and diuretics.

If you are pregnant, it is important that you
consult with your physician before taking any
medication, be it prescription or over-the-
counter. If you suspect that you may have in-
curred hearing loss, visit us at LUCAS-CRUZ
HEARING AID SERVICE for a comprehensive
hearing test. We provide and service many
makes and models of hearing instruments, in
order to be sure to have the one that's right for
your unique needs. We're your total hearing

ing loss. We are conveniently located at 18899

Imports Signal
Growing Economy

Scitex Distributes
P.INK Software

Higher industrial imports, in-
dustrial productivity and labor
productivity fueled economic ac-
tivity in Israel during the past
two months, while exports and
retail trade shrunk, according
to Central Bureau of Statistics
indicators.
In the past two months,
goods exports tumbled 57 per-
cent compared to October and
November, which experienced
a 116 percent rise from the pre-
vious two months. Despite such
volatility, goods exports in-
creased 15.7 percent last year.
By contrast, goods imports
shot up 53.3 percent in the past
two months after decreasing 1.4
percent in the previous two
months. Goods imports grew 8.5
percent last year.
Economists attribute the rise
in imports to growing econom-
ic activity. In particular, the in-
crease in commercial vehicle
imports reflects vigorous activ-
ity in expanding the country's
transportation infrastructure.

Scitex announced it has pur-
chased a 25 percent interest in
RINK and the exclusive rights
to distribute its software prod-
ucts.
According to the deal, Scitex
will be responsible for sales., cus-
tomer support and training
worldwide — excluding Ger-
many, Austria and Switzerland.
Scitex, which supplies sys-
tems to 60 of the 200 largest
newspapers in the world, will
benefit from the cooperation, ac-
cording to executive vice presi-
dent Yoav Chelouche.
"Scitex entered into this
agreement because it allows us
to offer full digital page make-
up solutions to newspapers and
other publishing markets," Mr.
Chelouche said.

Israel's money supply jumped
18.2 percent in the last quarter
of 1993 as financial speculative
activity surged following the
agreement with the PLO, ac-
cording to a Bank of Israel re-
port issued to the Cabinet and
the Knesset finance committee.
Fearing that the sharp ex-
pansion in the money supply
could threaten economic stabil-
ity by pushing prices up and
draining the country's foreign
currency reserves, Bank of Is-
rael Governor Jacob Frenkel
tightened credit last December
and in early January.
According to the report, the
tighter monetary policy suc-
ceeded in reversing the dra-
matic rise in the money supply.
In January, the money in cir-
culation fell 11.6 percent after
increasing by 3.2 percent in the
previous month.

`V Indicator
Rises 0.4 Percent

The Bank of Israel's "S," or state
of the economy indicator, rose
0.4 percent in January after
dropping 0.2 percent in De-
cember.
Preliminary figures reflect
improvement in retail trade and
imports. Retail sales jumped 3.5
percent in January after falling
by 4.6 percent in December.
Similarly, imports rose 12.4 per-
cent in January after falling 4.9
percent the previous month.

Israel Chemicals
Organizes Fund

A new fund for promoting bio-
logical and pharmaceutical re-
search and development is
being organized by Israel
Chemicals, the concern's offi-
cials announced.
ICL plans to establish the
fund with an initial capitaliza-
tion of $10 million, and is nego-
tiating with other groups to
bring its capitalization to be-
tween $30-40 million, senior
vice president for industry and
business development Daniel
Plotkin said.
The fund, expected to begin
in late 1994 or early 1995, will
provide money to public institu-
tions, induding universities, hos-
pitals and medical schools, for
basic pharmaceutical research.

U.S. Investment To
Hit $150 Million

Israeli companies and individ-
uals are expected to invest
about $150 million in real es-
tate in the U.S. this year, ac-
cording to a survey conducted
on behalf of Gazit, an overseas
investment company registered
on the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange.
Company spokesman Moshe
Ellat said there is a growth in
Israeli residents' investments
in the United States due to the
Finance Ministry's gradual lib-
eralization of financial markets.

$40 Million
in Deals

The Israeli Forum's Fourth
Business Conference has facil-
itated $40 million in business
deals between local and foreign
participants, conference orga-
nizers announced.
