On a recent trip to San Juan,
almost as soon as I arrived, I
took a quick bus ride from my
hotel, the Caribe Hilton, to Old
San Juan. To get reacquainted
with its charms, I first climbed
aboard the open air tram that
winds its way on a circular
route through Old San Juan.

open-air tram riding by, and
even some colorful dresses dis-
played outside a nearby store.
Tourists, painters, shoppers,
strollers — Old San Juan draws
them all. With its Spanish colo-
nial architecture and cobble-
stone streets, its historic sites
and colorful shopping streets,
this compact area is a world of
its own, with an ambiance that
feels more like a Spanish village
than an area within a
Caribbean city.
Designated a National His-
toric Zone by the U.S. govern-
ment, this 400-year-old city
within a city offers many at-
tractions to visitors, whether it's
a first time visit or, as in my
case, a return trip to an almost
familiar but still fascinating
place.

With its polished wood seats
and gleaming brass fixtures, the
tram offers a comfortable way
to enjoy the local color — espe-
cially during the heat of the day
— and it's also a sightseeing
bargain: The service is provid-
ed free to all passengers.
Comfortably seated in the
tram, we rode up and down the
narrow cobblestoned streets,
getting good views of the varied
shops with their eye-catching
window displays and Spanish
colonial facades.
Climbing higher, we also
caught a glimpse of the sea as
we rounded one corner: The old
city is situated on the peninsu-
la that separates San. Juan Bay
from the Atlantic Ocean, so
there are views of water from
many vantage points.
