llan Rein is an excellent

golfer. The 57-year-old
West Bloomfield resident
owns a four handicap,
and last summer he became
what's believed to be the oldest
winner of the championship
flight in Knollwood Country
Club's club championship tour-
nament.
But something was missing
in Rein's 45-year career on the
links: A hole-in-one. Last
month, he took care of that
"problem."
Rein scored his first ace Feb.
19 on the Cypress Course at
Palm-Aire in Pompano Beach,
Fla.
Using an 8-iron, Rein shot a
hole-in-one on the 150-yard par-
3 17th hole. For the round, the
attorney shot 2-over 74.
"I've seen guys in my group
shoot holes-in-one four or five
times over the years, and some
were horrendous golfers," Rein
said with a laugh. "I'm glad I fi-
nally got my first one. Hopeful-
ly, that won't be it. If you can
get one, you can get another."
Rein's memorable shot on the
heavily-bunkered 17th at the
Cypress Course dropped into
the cup on the fly after hitting
the pin.
"It was a high shot, so I real-
ly couldn't tell from the tee if
it had gone in," recalled Rein,
who was playing in a twosome
with his son, Jay, a Chicago res-
ident.
Besides being a fine golfer,
Rein is an avid one. He plays
about three times a week from
May through October, mostly
at Knollwood, and he gets in as

much winter golf as he can in
Florida. He's played the Cy-
press Course off and on for the
past eight years.
Rein survived a medal round
and three rounds of match play

Allan Rein

to win the Knollwood club
championship last August for
the first time in the 12 years
he's been a club member.
The championship match
was exciting. Rein nailed a 10-
foot downhill putt for a par on
the 440-yard par-4 18th hole to
win 1-up. ❑
