Educators discuss ways to teach
the Arab-Israeli crisis.

W

hen the Gulf War
broke out in 1991,
local congrega-
tional schools
herded their stu-
dents into one room to watch
CNN.
Ira Wise hopes the same is
not done in response to the mas-
sacre of Palestinians by Dr.

"In some ways, this situation
is just another type of crisis, like
the Gulf War, like the assassi-
nation of (Jewish Defense
League founder) Meir Kahane.
I think what we need to talk to
our kids about is the Jewish val-
ue on life.
"Yes, the Torah does give us
the ability to wage war. But this
wasn't war, it was a violent
act of terrorism. We need to
admit that and ask, 'What is
the right thing to do? "
Mr. Wise does not antici-
pate a school-wide program
to discuss the incident.
However, he is putting to-
gether a list of questions and
texts for teachers to use in
the classroom.
Most educators in the com-
munity agree the killings by
Dr. Goldstein must be ad-
dressed and discussed —
along with fanaticism, histo-
ry and Jewish texts — but
should not be the central
teaching.
"If we threw our regular
curriculum out the window
every time a madman went
berserk, we wouldn't have
anyone left who knew how to
read Torah," Mr. Wise said.
"We also need to teach what
living a proper Jewish life
means."
