The hotline serves to inform,
not counsel, teens who call with
concerns about sexually trans-
mitted diseases. Staci and oth-
ers say they do not tell callers
what to do. Rather, they listen,
clarify the risks of certain sex-
ual behavior, provide informa-
tion on STDs and give referrals
to clinics administering tests for
HIV and AIDS.
"We have to be like friends
giving callers information,"
Staci says.
The hotline has received calls
from teen-agers wondering if
oral sex can put them at risk.
(The answer is definitely yes.)
Some teen-age callers explain
they are unsure about how to
protect themselves during sex.
Hotline volunteers respond that
abstinence is the only 100 per-
cent way of avoiding STDs, but
latex condoms with non-oil-
based lubricants help greatly.
The Center for Disease Con-
trol reports that 76 percent of
young people have had sexual
intercourse by their senior year
of high school. The statistic, Ms.
Remsburg says, was derived
from a series of surveys cover-
ing many different demographic
areas — city and suburban,
American and ethnic, Jewish
and gentile.
Teenlink Hotline volunteers
are 15 to 21 years old. All vol-
unteers go through an intensive
training period involving much
role-playing before they answer
the phones.
