eeigi Beat Chiropractic Health Hints WITH DR. STANLEY LEVINE, D.C. SCIATIC PAIN Sciatica can be a severely painful condition. It is caused by inflammation of the sciatic nerve, a nerve which runs from the lower back through the hip and down the leg. The most common cause of sciatica is pinching or irritation of the nerve in the lower spine. Sciatica is one of the most common conditions for back surgery and has a high risk of complications. More recent interest in non-surgical treatments for sciatic nerve pain has caused several DR. LEVINE researchers to look at chiropractic manipulation as an alternative. Researchers at St. Thomas Hospital in London recently reported the results of non- surgical treatments for back and sciatic nerve pain in the British Journal of Rheumatology; they found Chiropractic manipulation the single most effective treat- ment in the 513 patients studied. A similar study, at the California College of Medicine at the University of Califor- nia Irvine, also found manipulation to significantly improve clinical signs of sciatic nerve compression. Clearly, chiropractic manipulation is one of the most effective con- servative treatments in those with sciatic nerve pain and should be the first considera- tion in those with sciatica. Don't Live With Pain. We Can Help! Teen To Teen Students inform peers via an HIV-STD hotline. RUTH LITTMANN STAFF WRITER taci Lichterman knows her classmates at West Bloomfield High School are not immune to AIDS. No one is. Each year, 3 million U.S. teen-agers are diagnosed with sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), including herpes, gon- orrhea, syphilis. This statistic S ent-to-child educational pro- grams, applauds the new hot- line. MJAC refers Jewish youth to the hotline. Karen Jacobson, a MJAC facilitator, said peer- to-peer communication is a pow- erful tool. "Peer education, as research shows, really impacts kids," she says. does not include teen-agers di- agnosed with HTV and AIDS. The Michigan Department of Public Health has documented 23 cases of AIDS in Michigan children ages 13 to 19. As of Sept. 1, 1993, 506 cases of AIDS among children and adults had been diagnosed in Oakland County. "AIDS is something that af- fects everyone," Staci says. `Too many of the people I know don't really understand what's going on." That's one reason Staci and 20 other young people in the tri- county area are volunteering for a new hotline. The Teenlink HTV-STD Hotline is the second in the nation to give teen-agers a chance to talk to their peers about AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases. The Michigan Jewish AIDS Coalition, which sponsors par- Teenlink HIV-STD Hotline is sponsored by Wellness Net- works Inc., a nonprofit organi- zation providing information, referral and support services to Michiganians concerned about sexually transmitted diseases. Thanks to a $40,000 grant from the United Way of Southeast- ern Michigan, the hotline oper- ates Monday through Friday, from 4 to 7 p.m. Since its inception in Janu- ary, the Teenlink Hotline has received numerous calls from Michigan teen-agers. TA st year, the general hotline, for youth and adults, received a total of 35,000 calls — 4,000 of which were placed by people under 21. "That was one of the reasons we thought about expanding to include a teen hotline," says Lynne Remshurg, Wellness Networks' youth services spe- cialist. We are pleased to announce by Felix Cruz Hearing Aid Specialist AN AGE-OLD PROBLEM Cf) w Cf) U1 CC F- LU LU F- 48 Just as adults in middle age and beyond can expect to experience a loss of near (reading) vision, so too can they expect age-related hear- ing loss. Presbycusis, which can be literally trans- lated to mean "old hearing," affects everyone sooner or later. As healthy, young children, we can distinguish sounds with frequencies rang- ing from 20Hz (the low note on a pipe organ) to 20,000Hz (a dog whistle). By middle age, our sensitivity to high-pitched sounds begins to de- cline. In our 50s and 60s, the loss extends to the frequency range which encompasses speech (250Hz to 8,000Hz), and discerning conversa- tion may be as difficult as reading a newspaper. However, one must be careful not to compare reading glasses with hearing instruments, which differ in their corresponding abilities. If you suspect that your hearing is not what it once was, you owe it to yourself to stop in for a quick, painless hearing test. Here at LUCAS-CRUZ HEARING AID SERVICE we have on staff knowledgeable hearing instruments consultants who are state licensed and have been working with hearing aids for the past two decades. We rehabilitate our clients into better hearing by offering checkup appoint- ments and consultations to insure a better fit- ting and sounding hearing aid. Our friendly facility is easy to reach at 18899 W. 12 Mile Rd. in Lathrup Village (424-8450). P.S.
