Sede Eliyahu in the Jordan
Valley. He founded the Israel
Bio-Organic Agricultural
Associatio (IBOAA), which to-
day has 200 members, main-
ly kibbutz collectives and
moshav cooperative set-
tlements. The IBOAA makes
regular field inspections and
enforces international stan-
dards such as the re-
quirements for export to the
European Economic
Community.
Under these regulations
fields must be left fallow for
three years before they can be
used for organic crops.
Pesticides and herbicides are
strictly prohibited but, in ad-
dition, neighboring fields
that do use such substances
must be at least 30 meters
distant or a minimum of 250
meters away if the crops are
sprayed by aircraft.
Yossi Gold, a farmer on Kib-
butz Meirav in Israel's
Galilee region, who grows car-
rots and broccoli organically,
explains that while such
environment-friendly produce
fetches about one and a half
times the price of regular
crops, raising them involves
double the work.
"There is the constant
chore of weeding by hand," he
explains, "because herbicides
are not used, and we must be
very vigilant about pests, too.
But it's worth the effort. Too
many farmers are polluting
the ground that provides
them with their
livelihood."

Shekels,
Comrade?
Tel Aviv (JTA) — Israel's
Bank Hapoalim and Bank
Stolichni, one of Russia's
leading banks, are currently
finalizing a deal which will
enable the two banks to rec-
ognize each other's credit
cards.
After the arrangement
goes into effect, holders of
Russian credit cards will be
able to obtain shekels from
Bank Hapoalim automatic
teller machines, and holders
of Israeli credit cards will
similarly be able to obtain
rubles through Bank
Stolichni.
The agreement is intended
for the convenience of the
thousands of tourists and
businessmen who visit Israel
and Russia each year. ❑
