Farrakhan Is Given
Television Platform
Los Angeles (JTA) — Louis
Farrakhan, basking in the
spotlight of national atten-
tion, used the platform of a
late- night television show to
repeat his well-worn charges
that Jews had controlled the
African slave trade, while
rejecting the label of a
"black Hitler."
Appearing on the syn-
dicated Arsenio Hall Show
on Feb. 25, days after being
featured on the cover of
Time magazine, the Nation
of Islam leader shelved most
of his histrionics in favor of a
modulated delivery heard
over some 160 TV stations
across the country.
Farrakhan's appearance
on the show had been oppos-
ed by Jewish defense agen-
cies, gay groups and even
numerous black viewers —
Louis Farrakhan
including actress Whoopi
Goldberg — as a clearly ner-
vous Hall, as host of the
show, acknowledged.
Despite such opposition,
Hall declared at the beginn-
ing of the taped program,
"I've got to do what I've got
to do," to the applause of the
audience.
During the course of the
program, Farrakhan denied
involvement in the 1965
slaying of Black Muslim
leader Malcolm X, said he
had no Jewish friends,
though he had "reached out
to rabbis and the Anti-
Defamation League,"
demanded reparations to
compensate blacks for cen-
turies of slavery and charged
that the media was
mistreating pop star
Michael Jackson like "a
slave on a plantation."
Asked by Hall why he was
sometimes described as a
"new black Hitler," Far-
rakhan rejected the appella-
tion.
"I never desired to put
human beings in ovens. I
never said Jews should be
exterminated because of
their being Jewish," he ex-
plained.
The ADL and the Simon
Wiesenthal Center had pro-
tested the Farrakhan ap-
pearance, and their spokes-
men were invited by Hall
and his producer to pose
taped questions to Far-
rakhan. Both organizations
rejected the invitation.
"They wanted to give us
five to 10 seconds to say that
Farrakhan was a bigot, edit
this down and then give him
five minutes to respond,"
said Rabbi Marvin Hier,
dean of the Wiesenthal
Center.
"If they wanted to be fair,
they would have given us 15
minutes, or even equal time
with Farrakhan," he said.
Hier described the pro-
gram itself as "a complete
infomercial," with Far-
rakhan as guest of honor and
Hall as master of
ceremonies.
David Lehrer, the regional
ADL director in Los
Angeles, also declined to
participate but provided the
producer with background
information on Farrakhan.
Lehrer said the program was
marked by "incredibly obse-
quious interviewing."
One person who did accept
Hall's invitation was Iry
Rubin, national head of the
Jewish Defense League.
Rubin said that he taped a
one-minute question to
refute Farrakhan's claim
that Jews controlled the
slave trade, then taped an-
other minute moderating
some of the language.
On the show, Hall men-
tioned Rubin's name but did
not run the taped question.
"I was knifed in the back,"
said Rubin, adding that he
would confront Hall
whenever possible, and that
he was denied admission to
the show when it was his
turn in the waiting line.
A request by a Jewish
Telegraphic Agency reporter
to attend the show's taping
was denied.
On the day preceding the
program, the ADL took out a
full- page advertisement in
Variety, the show business
trade publication, citing 14
quotations from Far-
rakhan's speeches. El
