arriet Drissman of Farm-
ington Hills thinks the
world has a double stan-
dard for Jews and Arabs.
To prove it, she points to the in-
ternational outrage over last
week's massacre in Hebron.
"You have at least 35 to 40
Jews who have been killed since
that famous handshake be-
tween Yitzhak Rabin and Yas-
sir Arafat last September, but
no one has even mentioned
them," she said. "It's not even a
double standard. It's no stan-
dard. Arabs can do anything
they please."
In the days since Dr. Baruch
Goldstein gunned down 40-50
people last Friday, American
Jews have reacted in many dif-
ferentways. Some, like Ms.
Drissman, who affiliates with
two local groups tied to the late
Rabbi Meir Kahane, do not re-
pudiate the act. They believe
Dr. Goldstein must have had a
legitimate motive.

Other local Jews have issued
formal statements of opposition
to the violence.
Richard Lobenthal of the
Anti-Defamation League said
he can't predict whether the
killings will set off a wave of
anti-Jewish feeling in Detroit.
"I don't see any evidence that
the local or world community is
seeing this as a Jewish plot," he
said.
But the Detroit Interfaith
Round Table co-chairman
Michael Berry said the incident
has cast a shadow on Jews.
"Some are starting to ques-
tion the attitude of the Jews,
whether they really intend and
mean to be seeking peace in the
Middle East." ❑
