Dinah Shore

Los Angeles (JTA) — Dinah
Shore, whose more than five
decades in show business
spanned the big-band era,
the heyday of radio, a string
of record hits, and television
from its infancy to the pre-
sent, died last week of
cancer, five days before her
77th birthday.
Before and during all her
successes in American show
business, she was a Jewish
girl from Tennessee.
During Shore's active ca-
reer from 1938 to 1991, she
became one of America's
most enduring and beloved
entertainers. In the words of
one close friend, "We have
lost one of the voices that
defined an era."
Shore won 10 Emmy
Awards, more than any
other performer in televi-
sion; a Peabody Award; had
nine gold records; and from
1941 to 1962 topped the polls
as America's most popular
female vocalist.
She was also the author of
three best-selling cookbooks,
an avid golfer and tennis
player, a champion of
animal rights, and a sup-
porter of various Jewish
causes, particularly the
Hebrew University in
Jerusalem.
The woman frequently de-
scribed as a golden-haired
Southern belle was born
Frances Rose Shore in Win-
chester, in southeast Ten-
nessee, where her father,
Solomon, was part owner of
a department store.
As the only Jewish family
in the small town, the
Shores faced the usual anti-
Semitism of the time and
place, and little Frances,
then called Fanny, saw and
remembered for the rest of
her life a hooded Ku Klux
Klan parade passing her
father's store.
She was stricken with
polio when she was 18 mon-
ths old and was left with a
slight limp throughout her
adolescence. She sought to
overcome the handicap
through sports.
She overcame what she
perceived as her physical
unattractiveness and
shyness by taking drama,
singing and ukulele lessons.
