n Israeli company has
developed an innova-
tive, lightweight mini-
fax that is ideal for use
in isolated regions. The por-
table satellite communica-
tions device is contained in an
attache case and consists of a
computer, operating system,
printer, antenna and satel-
lite-communications inter-
face. Known as the Bip-Sat
system, the device was
developed by the Rafael
Development Authority and
is being marketed worldwide
by Solan Telecommunication
and Computers aLtd.
"This device is unique
because it is so user-friendly,"
stresses Reuven Solan, direc-
tor of marketing and product
development for Solan
Telecommunication and Com-
puters. "While its price,
$12,250, is comparable to
similar products made in
Europe, North America and
the Far East, it has several
features that other such
systems do not have."
Mr. Solan emphasizes the
patented and built-in flat
antenna developed and incor-
porated into the attache
case's cover. Instead of having
to assemble the antenna and
raise it high into the air in
the direction of a satellite —
a procedure that takes about
15 minutes — the user of the

Bip-Sat System simply has to
lift the attache case cover,
maneuver it in the direction
of a space satellite using the
device's compass, and send
the fax or electronic message.
"This can be accomplished
in 30 seconds," says Mr. Solan,
"even by an inexperienced
user. In addition, the Bi-Sat
weighs only 8.5 kilograms
(18.7 pounds), almost 20 per-
cent less than any other
system."
These are crucial considera-
tions, especially the time fac-
tor, which can mean the dif-
ference between life and
death. The system is design-
ed for use by journalists and
emergency teams in
dangerous situations, cover-
ing disasters, as well as for
travelers in remote areas,
such as sailors, pilots and
mountain climbers. The
system is also useful for fac-
tories or research stations
located in isolated places.
Bip-Sat can function in-
dependently on batteries for
a number of hours without
the need for an electric cable.
Solan Telecommunication
and Computers reports that
the Bip-Sat is already selling
well in Europe, the United
STates and the Far East, and
has also been bought by corn-
panies in China, Africa and
Latin America. ❑

Bio-Organic
Harvests

SIMON GRIVER SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS

I

sraeli farmers are in-
creasingly switching to
bio-organic agriculture.
This not only produces
healthier products and a
cleaner environment but also
makes highly profitable
economic sense since
organically nurtured fruits
and vegetables fetch
premium prices.
In 1992 alone, Israeli
farmers exported 6,200 tons
of organically grown fresh
fruit and vegetables for more
than $5.5 million. This figure
includes 1,200 tons of citrus
fruit, mainly oranges and
grapefruit; 3,900 tons of
vegetables, principally car-
rots, tomatoes, potatoes,
celery and broccoli; and 1,100

tons of fruit, especially
avocados and bananas. The
produce was marketed by the
Israeli company Agrexco
under the brand name
Carmel Bio-Top. According to
Tali Ziv Lahav of Agrexco's
marketing department, most
of the produce is purchased in
Germany, France, Britain and
Scandinavia.
"Bio-Top is most popular,"
she explains, "Where green
awareness is at its highest.
For this reason, the American
market has also begun to buy
our organically grown pro-
ducts, especially winter-
grown tomatoes and carrots."
Organic farming was in-
troduced into Israel in 1983
by Mario Levy, from Kibbutz
