4 111 ewish students at Wayne

State University discov-
ered a swastika outside
the Hillel office last Fri-
day following news of the
killings at the mosque in
Hebron.
The students alerted Hillel
program director Neil Gottheil,
who called campus police. A
WSU administrator covered the
swastika with spray paint.
There are no suspects in the
case.
"The incident might be the
result of what happened (in Is-
rael) last Friday. It might have
been the work of a homeless
person whom we asked not to
hang around here," said Miri-
am Starkman, director of Hil-
lel of MetroDetroit, which is
headquartered at WSU.
The Hillel office is on the
sixth floor of the Student Cen-
ter Building. People in nearby
offices said they did not witness
the crime. The swastika was
scrawled in black marker on a
wall behind a door. The par-
tially opened door likely shield-
ed the perpetrator.
Students who spotted the
graffiti responded with "a bit of
shock and surprise."
"-It wasn't a joking matter by
any means," Mr. Gottheil said.
Gentile workers at WSU also
expressed concern.
"I was initially mad, then
kind of saddened," said Eliza-
beth Bolsen from the testing de-
partment, located near the

Hillel office. "We're all human,
and we all better learn to get
along."
Last summer, an anti-
Semitic flyer appeared on cam-
pus depicting a bloody Jewish
star, a swastika and a Nazi gun
aimed at a man with payot.
Ms. Starkman said Metro
Detroit Hillel probably will re-
spond to these incidents by
inviting speakers to educate the
community about Jewish reli-
gion and culture.
Toward that end, Hillel of
MetroDetroit will co-sponsor
with other WSU departments
an April 15 Holocaust confer-
ence for educators. The goal is
to help students of education
and metro Detroit teachers
deliver lessons on the Holo-
