nauseated by the raw stench of
bigotry and racial hate. [It] ... is
obscene, disgusting and revolt-
ing. [It] ... sink[s] to the depths
of depravity, spewing forth vi-
ciousness and ugliness."
But the editorial also bristled
at demands from whites , for
black leaders to "respond to
what one single, solitary black
individual had to say, as if the
total community was collec-

tively responsible and must
apologize. As far as we can de-
termine, this yoke of collective
responsibility is not placed
around the neck of any other
ethnic or racial group, when one
of its members utters a racial-
ly offensive remark..."
And from Calvin Trillin in
The Nation, this witty ditty:

Muhammad's speech, the
leader said, held truths.
It wasn't just an exercise in
spleen.
He said that, mostly, slaves
were owned by Jews.
How come there aren't more

nightclubs and gambling joints
on and around Kings Highway
in Brooklyn."
Mr. Abecassis quickly
learned more about the "mob"
and its workings. Writes jour-
nalist William Sherman, "Un-
like the Italian Mafia —
infinitely more entrenched and
with far greater numbers in the
United States— the Israelis
have no rituals in which new
members are 'made' and pledge
their lives to the organization
and its secrets. Nor do the Is-
raelis have a regimented struc-
ture of soldiers and captains,
with a boss at the 'head' of the
family. There is no tribute that
must be paid to a leader."
When another Israeli immi-
grant tried to change the "sys-
tem" by organizing his
colleagues along traditional
Mafia lines, "he was dealt with
Mafia-style — gunned down on
Jan. 18, 1990, as he left an Is-
raeli restaurant in Brooklyn."
"[Johnny] Attias ... wanted a
piece of everything," said Mr.
Abecassis, "so he was killed by
his own partners."
Tb smuggle some heroin into
the United States, an Israeli
"mobster" once joined a Cha-
sidic ,tour bus in Montreal
bound for Manhattan.
"At the border," said Mr.
Abecassis, "they don't check a
bus filled with Chasidim very
carefully."
Mr. Abecassis, who was con-
victed in the summer of 1992,
said he's squealing on his for-
mer crime pals because of their
"treachery" — and also because
"the government screwed me
up." He and his parents now
face long prison terms on
charges of conspiring to import
heroin. In reality, he says, he
was informing on the scheme
the entire time. ❑

Inside The Israeli
Drug Mafia

Amid the fleshpots of Penthouse
magazine, there's a wordy in-
terview with a convict who
claims to blow the cover on
what the raunchy magazine
calls the "most secretive of
mobs" and its link "to the in-
ternational drug trade, money
laundering and other illicit ac-
tivities that have made it infa-
mous even among its fellow
partners in crime."
The thugs are from Israel,
and the source of all this inside
dope is Raphael Abecassis, now
in a federal prison in lower
Manhattan. Shortly after Mr.
Abecassis immigrated to the
United States in 1979, a rela-
tive recruited him to help with

a money-laundering operation
for a Colombia cocaine cartel.
Soon, he was selling cocaine by
the kilo to buyers he met in
"kosher Israeli restaurants,

Editor Heads
Palestinian Bank

Jerusalem (JTA) — The
former editor of a Palestin-
ian newspaper published in
eastern Jerusalem has been
tapped to head a new Pales-
tinian banking venture
backed by an international
consortium.
Hanna Siniora, previously
the editor of the A 1-
Fajr newspaper, will become
the senior officer of the
International Palestinian
Bank, a co-venture to be es-
tablished by Bank Leumi.
As part of its backing of
the new banking venture,
Bank Leumi has apparently
agreed to train workers and
provide computer services
for the Palestinian bank.
