What do you get when you give your family a Jewish Community Center General Family Membership now? alone does not resolve conflict. The sedrah suggests an ad- ditional dimension. In the dis- cussion between God and Moses, God is angry with Israel with her sinfulness and wants to destroy the people. Moses cannot argue convincingly on their behalf, because he, him- self, has become their accuser. But then he becomes their counselor and advocate and he beseeches God with the follow- ing argument "Remember Abraham, Isaac and Israel, Thy servants. You said to them, I will multiply your seed as the stars of the heaven and they shall inherit this land forever." Moses does not deny the be- trayal. The truth must be ac- cepted. But he turns to God and describes a love which He had shown the patriarchs, the founders of this people. Re- member them, and remember how they love you. We may call this the strate- gy of remembered love. One cannot pacify a person in the hour of his anger. But when the wrath and the frustration ebb, bitterness may be softened by reflection and finally overcome by remembered love. Moses must have drawn upon other memories: the call which ap- pointed him to be God's mes- senger, the years of travail, the anxiety of the Red Sea and the joy of deliverance. This love, strong, deep and penetrating, arises within his heart and en- ables him to climb the moun- tain once more. In human relationships, we need to draw upon remembered love. Every powerful human linkage has, in its beginning, a relationship of love and un- derstanding. There is no chance for rebuilding a broken home when there was no love to be- gin with. One cannot restore a broken friendship when there never was any affection. But these qualities did exist. In mar- riage, there were moments of tenderness, common hopes, mu- tual longing and deep com- radeship. The way to find the path to reconciliation is to re- member, to restore to con- sciousness the tenderness, respect and affection which we knew. We are prone to recall the good we did for others and re- mind them of our sacrifices for them. That is not always help- ful. We also need to remember the love and companionship we received. We have to remind ourselves of the joy and happi- ness of such occasions. The cas- es are rare when husband and wife, children and parents, brothers, sisters and friends cannot draw upon such re- membered love to sustain and strengthen the bonds that joined their lives. $100 OFF* Plus • Indoor & Outdoor Pools • Indoor & Outdoor Tracks • Indoor & Outdoor Tennis • Indoor Golf Driving Cages • Fitness Room • Racquetball • Gymnasium • Softball Field • Squash • Walleyball Sand Volleyball • • Olympic Weight Room • Soccer Field • Reduced Fees For Classes, Services & Events Or $50 off all Individual Memberships * * Must not have been a member in the past year. * Teen Affiliate and Social Memberships not included. * Special valid through March 1994. • Indoor tennis available for an additional fee. of Metropolitan Detroit Call Today 661-7622 or 967-4030 WHO HAS IT?
