All 5th Graders, Parents and Teachers: Attend the 7th Annual Four Jews On ANC Slate Johannesburg (JTA) — Four Jews are among the top 50 names on the African Na- tional Congress' slate of candidates for South Africa's first non-racial elections in April. Several other Jews are listed among the ANC's top 200. The ANC, led by President Nelson Mandela, is the first political party to announce its list of candidates for the country's Parliament. The party's list was published in the national media. Joe Slovo, chairman of the South African Communist Party, a longtime ally of the ANC, holds the No. 4 slot in the party list. The only candidates to receive a greater number of votes for party candidate were Mr. Mandela; Cyril Ramaphosa, ANC secretary- general; and Thabo Mbeki, ANC chairman. Mr. Ramaphosa and Mr. Mbeki are rivals to even- tually succeed Mandela as president of the ANC and probably of the country. The flamboyant Ronnie Kasrils, former chief of intel- ligence of the ANC's armed wing Umkhonto weSizwe and formerly one of the country's "most-wanted" people during the anti- apartheid struggle, received the eighth-highest number of votes. Raymond Suttner, who was detained in South African prisons for many years for his anti-apartheid activities, is at No. 30, and ANC spokesperson Gill Marcus holds position No. 47. Mr. Slovo, Mr. Kasrils and Mr. Marcus, all former ex- iles, returned to South Africa after the ban on the ANC was lifted in 1990. Polls indicate that the ANC is likely to win over 120 of the 200 seats in Parliament under the new proportional representation system. The ANC issued a state- ment along with publication of its list of candidates, say- ing, "The democratic ideal rests on nothing less than true representation; on the assurance that the interests of all are served. "Only an ANC govern- ment can live up to this ideal because it will represent every race, religion and cul- ture in our country," the ANC said. ❑ Sunday, March 6, 1994 N 9 a.m. — Noon Temple Beth El (Telegraph Road at 14 Mile) Be on time to catch The Magic of Tzedakah presented by illusionist Michael Jacobson Participate in the exciting Penny Harvest Collection Co-sponsored by: Temple Beth El Women's Division, Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit Jewish Experiences For Families Agency for Jewish Education The Jewish News Jewish Educators Council For more information, contact: Women's Division, 642-4260, ext. 183 TRUST YOUR NEXT CATERED AFFAIR TO THE FINEST KOSHER CATERER We Cater At Most Synagogues, Temples, Hotels and the Halls of Your Choice Specializing In: • • • • • • Weddings Bar/Bat Mitzvahs Anniversaries Conventions Office Parties MI Occasions From 50 U) 2500 I YOUR EXERCISE CONNECTION • TREADMILLS Electric/Manual • STAIR CLIMBERS • HEALTH BIKES Manual/Dual Action/Electric • ROWING MACHINES • MISC.
