etting 60 sixth-graders to
dance with senior citi-
zens may sound like an
impossible accomplish-
ment — but it wasn't.
On Feb. 22, the sixth-grade
classes from Hillel Day School
spent part of the afternoon so-
cializing at the Jimmy Prentis
Morris Jewish Community
Center with about 80 seniors,
mainly from the Oak Park area.

Many of the Hillel students,
who were eager to share their
thoughts about the day's events,
said being with the seniors
made them feel important.
Josh Grant said he feels good
about what Dor L'Dor does be-
cause of the mitzvot he and his

cil of Jewish Women Greater
Detroit Section program, was
established nine years ago and
is modeled after a New York-
based pilot program. It brings
together senior citizens and
youths and allows the genera-
tions to learn from each other.
"It's an opportunity for the
seniors to be with a young per-
son of today on a one-to-one ba-
sis and spend a quality moment
of time with them," said Carol
Rosenberg, director of commu-
nity relations and development
for the Jewish Home for Aged.
'There is a lot of bonding go-
ing on here, and it's nice for
them to be around the kids be-
cause some don't have grand-
children or their grandchildren
are out of town."
Susie Zaks, the upper-school
coordinator at Hillel, said Dor
L'Dor is important for the stu-
dents because it gives them a
chance to learn from the older
adults.
Younger Hillel students look
forward to the sixth grade be-
cause they know they will be
able to participate in the pro-
gram, Ms. Zaks said.
Those present at Tuesday's
inter-generational Purim par-
ty were all smiles as they so-
cialized, ate hamantashen and
did the "Hokey Pokey" and
"Chicken Dance."
"This is just wonderful," said
Esther Crane. "As old as I may
be, it brings back memories of
when I was young and reminds

help someone out," he said. "It's
nice to know they care about us
and we care about them."
Alyssa Goldberg, program co-
ordinator of adult services at the
JCC, said she was a little ner-
vous about the prospect of
bringing 60 students and 90 se-
nior adults together. Later, she
said she was pleased.
Although Dor L'Dor has been
an ongoing monthly program,
this is the first time all the stu-
dents have gone to the same lo-
cation.
Federation Apartments, the
Jewish Home for Aged and the
Maple-Drake Jewish Commu-
nity Center also have received
visits from Hillel's Dor L'Dor
participants. ❑
