CUNY Black Studies
Not Under Jeffries‘'

New York (JTA) — The head
of a new African American
research institute at the
City University of New York
said he hopes the institute's
work will set "new stan-
dards" for black studies
scholarship.
The institute will be out-
side the auspices of Professor
Leonard Jeffries, chairman
of City College's black
studies department, who
was removed — and later
reinstated — to his post
amid criticism of his alleged-
ly racist and anti-Semitic
views.
The establishment of the
institute was seen by some
observers as a means of
scaling back Mr. Jeffries' in-
fluence at the school.
Heading the institute will
be Edmund Gordon, who was
praised for his work as head
of the black studies depart-
ment in Mr. Jeffries'
absence.
The CUNY Institute for
Research on the Diaspora in
the Americas and the Carib-
bean, as the new center will
be called, is a graduate
center organized around
task forces on black diaspora
life.
In an interview, Mr. G-or-
don that he hopes the in-
stitute's work will strike "a
greater balance" between
work on Africa and the
African diaspora, explaining
that he wants to introduce
students to a range of
perspectives on the African
experience.
"As we raise the standard
of expectations, I hope we
will influence all students,"
he said.
Mr. Jeffries' department
has been criticized for focus-
ing too heavily on the black
experience in Africa.
Mr. Gordon said his in-
stitute is not intended to
counter the work of the
black studies department,
which will remain in place
as an undergraduate pro-
gram, but that he hopes
students and faculty in-
volved in black studies may
be influenced "by example."
While there are no formal
plans to engage in work on
black- Jewish relations, Mr.
Gordon said he was
"delighted" at the prospect
of such work and said it was
likely that a task force deal-
ing with black-Jewish issues
would be formed.

one like Jeffries."
In March 1992, Mr. Jef-
fries was fired from his post
as head of the City College's
Black Studies Department
because of allegedly anti-
Semitic remarks he made in
a 1991 address.
Mr. Jeffries was later
reinstated as department
head, a post he had held
since 1972, after a court rul-
ed that the university had
violated his First Amend-
ment rights.

Veritgo
Causes Crash

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Pilot ver-
tigo caused the helicopter
crash which last month
killed the military officer in
charge of the West Bank, ac-
cording to the findings of an
investigating commission.
The crash killed Maj. Gen.
Nechemia Tamari, the head
of the Israel Defense Force's
Central Command, his aide
and two pilots.
Investigators said the
pilots were disoriented as
they sought to land at the
Central Command head-
quarters north of Jerusalem
amid high winds and blin-
ding low clouds.
Maj. Gen. Tamari and his
aide and pilots had been
returning to their base after
a flight to oversee a search
for reported infiltrators.
